Apsu exists as part of the original cosmic waters, paired with Tiamat (saltwater). Together they form the undifferentiated primordial ocean before creation.

In early mythic traditions, Apsu and Tiamat give birth to the first generation of gods, making Apsu a primordial progenitor of divine beings.

=== Conflict with the Younger Gods ===
In the Enuma Elish, Apsu becomes disturbed by the noise of the younger gods. He is eventually killed by Enki (Ea), who builds his dwelling over Apsu’s body.

After Apsu’s death, Enki establishes his temple (the Apsu/Abzu), symbolizing the continued presence of freshwater wisdom beneath creation.
