The demon king Hiranyakashipu receives a boon making him nearly invincible: he cannot be killed by man or animal, indoors or outdoors, during day or night, on earth or in the sky, or by any weapon.

=== Protection of Prahlada ===
Despite his father’s cruelty, Prahlada remains a devoted follower of Vishnu. Narasimha appears to protect him when no other force can.

=== Emergence from the Pillar ===
Narasimha emerges from a pillar in Hiranyakashipu’s palace, bypassing the constraints of the boon.

=== Slaying of the Demon King ===
At twilight (neither day nor night), Narasimha kills Hiranyakashipu on a threshold (neither indoors nor outdoors), placing him on his lap (neither earth nor sky), using his claws (not a weapon).
